Let me tell you as a umm, wiser, older woman ( Ok, 45 plus..) I am probably not John Joseph's target audience. I first saw him in a you tube video of him making a vegan health smoothie. I knew who the Cro Mags were, but have NEVER even now, heard one of their songs. So, I knew this was not a book about Cro Mags, but more about John Joseph himself and how he went from a starving child in foster care, to a passionate vegan human. Wow this is some life he has had. I cried, I wanted to adopt that little boy and feed him. His story is so touching, you cannot walk away from it without compassion for what it takes to survive on the street. I am baffled how his extended family was not able to care for him. I am amazed how he has turned his life around and the passion he has. There was quite a bit about the Cro Mags and how he got there, but the whole book is not about that, contrary to what some reviewers where looking for I guess. I do not think he was bragging about his stealing, or what he had to do to survive. It was simply his story to tell, on what he simply had to do to eat. I,myself, do not really understand the Hare Krishna's but he found peace with them. I have led many people to buy his books. Again, this is his story, not just the Cro Mags story. It simply says it all in the title, how he evolved to where he is today. I encourage everyone to buy it.
I am an acquaintance of John's.he literally gave me a shirt and I thought about it for a bit about how talented and generous he is. His story makes mine look like a fairy tale.I still can never get used to a lot of the places we hung out at " The Alcatraz" and many parks got renamed and cleaned up alot.This book is a must read ,and remains the only book I have ever read from cover to cover except for automotive tech books, that was my higher education.
I grew up listening to punk and hardcore, I knew of the Cromags but not too much. I heard John Joseph talking on the Jason Ellis show and was immediately captivated. I sought the book, Andy savored each of his words. Learning of so many things he has seen and done have given me inspiration to seek higher ground in life. The best part is he will actually email you back.
A man's story about overcoming adversity and evolving to a positive place in life. He's unapologetic about the people he's conned & hurt over the years, even laughs about it. At the end of the book though, he reveals his depth and sincerity to be of service to others. Inspiring.
Overall a great read, great story, and some straight up inspiration to anyone in need. Such a unique life John Joseph has lived and as a fan of the Cro-mags I couldn't wait to check it out. What I'd get out if it was much more than a story of one of the best front men in the history of hardcore music. Trials and tribulations, stories of the street, and some consciousness. It's a must read for the stories and it might even save your life if you're in a bad place. It's served as a positive for me when there was plenty of negativity in my life. Much respect John.
I'm still reading this, and almost done. This is epic and funny. John is great a story-teller. I completely relate to his style, and way with words. He makes me feel at home like I'm a kid again "B.S-ing" w/my friends on a street corner about old times. I've heard that this may be worked into a screenplay. If that's the case, I can hardly wait to see it and see if the movie would do justice to the book. Highly recommend, very engaging read.

A truly accurate depiction of growing up in the 70's and 80's as a product of divorce, life on the streets and the New York Hardcore scene. I highly recommend this book!!
